Professor Alex Baker is a leading academic in Marine and Atmospheric Chemistry at the University of East Anglia (UEA), where he has been since 1997. He holds the title of Professor of Marine and Atmospheric Chemistry within the School of Environmental Sciences and is affiliated with the Centre for Ocean and Atmospheric Sciences and ClimateUEA. His career spans roles including RCUK Academic Fellow and Reader before his current position. Baker’s research focuses on interactions between the ocean and atmosphere, particularly nutrient deposition (e.g., iron, phosphorus) and iodine biogeochemistry, with implications for marine productivity and the global carbon cycle.
- Education: BSc (Hons) Chemistry with Oceanography (University of Southampton, 1987); PhD in Marine Chemistry (University of Southampton, 1992)
- Key Research Areas: Aerosol solubility, atmospheric nutrient impacts on marine ecosystems, iodine cycling in marine environments
Baker leads projects funded by the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) and collaborates internationally. His work includes studies on microplastics in the atmosphere and the role of atmospheric acidity in nutrient deposition. He is involved in initiatives like the GESAMP Working Group 38, addressing atmospheric inputs to oceans.
His 127+ publications span topics like trace metal solubility, pesticide distribution in the atmosphere, and aerosol-海洋 interactions. He supervises PhD students and contributes to teaching in marine/atmospheric chemistry and analytical environmental methods.
