Professor Douglas Bourn is the Professor of Development Education and Founding Director of the Development Education Research Centre (DERC) at University College London's IOE - Curriculum, Pedagogy & Assessment. He established the Development Education Research Centre in 2006 and the Academic Network on Global Education and Learning (ANGEL). He also launched the International Journal of Development Education and Global Learning and authored the Bloomsbury Handbook of Global Education. Since 2008, he has led the Global Learning MA program (now co-led by Dr. Clare Bentall).
His research focuses on education for sustainable development, pedagogy of hope, and global citizenship, addressing challenges like climate change and global inequality. He holds a PhD from Keele University and has served on numerous governmental advisory panels, including the UK Committee on the Decade of Education for Sustainable Development (2004–2009).
Professional roles include Chair of the Academic Network for Global Education Researchers (2017–2023), Chair of Global Learning London, and Co-Chair of UCL's Cultural Understanding Working Group. His work emphasizes global perspectives and collaboration across cultures.
