Douglas Alexander Olsen is an Assistant Teaching Professor and Director of Jazz Activities at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI), within the Music Department of the Humanities & Arts school. He has over 25 years of experience as a freelance trumpeter in jazz and world music, performing with notable groups like the Smithsonian Masterworks Jazz Orchestra, Berklee College of Music Faculty Bigband, and the John Almark Jazz Orchestra.
Research & Performance: Olsen specializes in jazz performance, ensemble direction, and music education. He directs WPI’s Stage Band, Jazz Ensemble, Jazz Combo, and Brass Ensemble. His 2019 album Two Cents, published by BMI, received critical acclaim and is available on streaming platforms. He also leads his own projects, including Latin Bash and the Doug Olsen Quintet.
