Dorothea Gädeke serves as Professor of Political Theory and Legal Theory at the Otto Suhr Institute of Political Science, Free University of Berlin, a position held since August 2024. Her interdisciplinary work bridges analytical normative philosophy with continental and non-Western philosophical traditions to address systemic power imbalances.
Her research program centers on developing critical republicanism through the synthesis of neo-republican frameworks, Kantian philosophy, and Frankfurt School critical theory. She investigates structural domination in global North-South relations while engaging African philosophical perspectives to confront epistemic injustices within academic institutions themselves.
Gädeke's publication record, highlighted by her 2017 monograph "Politics of Domination", analyzes the paradoxical relationship between democracy promotion initiatives and postcolonial critiques—demonstrating how both pursue non-domination yet perpetuate domination. Current research focuses on "freedom from below" theories and participation in the Cluster of Excellence Contestations of the Liberal Script.
She previously co-directed NWO-funded research on digital technologies and democracy in the Global South through Utrecht University's Ethics Institute within the Gravitation Consortium Ethics of Socially Disruptive Technologies.
