Dorota Wiśniewska is a University Professor at the Department of Research on the Development of State and Law within the Faculty of Law and Administration at the University of Lodz. She currently serves as Vice-Dean of the Faculty of Law and Administration for Science and as Head of both the Department of Research on the Development of State and Law and the Department of Research on the Development of Administration and Law.
Dr. Wiśniewska graduated from the Faculty of Law and Administration at the University of Lodz in 2004. She defended her doctoral dissertation in 2009 under the supervision of Professor Jacek Matuszewski on the topic 'Matrimonial Property Law in the Light of Prenuptial Agreements Prepared by Łódź Notaries in the Years 1841-1875.' In 2020, she was awarded the degree of doctor habilitated based on her monograph 'Prefabricated Property in Łódź in the Years 1820-1866.'
Her research focuses on the history of judicial law in force in Polish territories, with particular emphasis on comparative legal history. She specializes in 19th-century matrimonial, property, and inheritance law and its transformation throughout the 20th century. Dr. Wiśniewska has conducted extensive research on legal relationships in the Kingdom of Poland and the Second Polish Republic, examining historical judicial systems, legal professions, and cooperative movements. Her work provides valuable insights into women's legal status throughout different historical periods in Poland.
Dr. Wiśniewska has received significant recognition for her scholarly contributions, including the University of Lodz Rector's Award in 2021 for her monograph on prefabricated property in 19th-century Łódź, and another Rector's Award in 2022 for her contribution to evaluating scientific activity quality at the university.
She has successfully completed a research grant from the National Science Centre on 'Inheritance law of the Second Polish Republic in the case law of district courts' and has organized numerous academic conferences. Dr. Wiśniewska actively supervises the Legal History Research Club at the Faculty of Law and Administration and serves as Vice-Chair of the University of Lodz Commission for Academic Degrees in Legal Sciences.
Professional memberships include the Polish Historical Society, the European Society for Comparative Legal History, and the Polish Society of the History of Law (where she serves as chairwoman of the Audit Committee).
