Donna Zulman, MD, MS, is an Assistant Professor of Medicine at Stanford University's School of Medicine and a Physician Investigator at the VA Palo Alto Health Care System's Center for Innovation to Implementation (Ci2i). Her research focuses on optimizing healthcare delivery for patients with multiple chronic conditions, complex medical needs, and social risks, with a particular emphasis on leveraging health-related technologies to personalize care and improve outcomes for high-risk populations.
Dr. Zulman received her MD from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), completed an Internal Medicine residency at the University of Michigan, and earned a Master's in Health and Health Care Research through the Robert Wood Johnson Clinical Scholars Program at the University of Michigan and the Ann Arbor VA. She is currently supported by a VA Health Services Research & Development Career Development Award.
Her work addresses disparities in telehealth access, the role of social determinants in healthcare outcomes, and the implementation of virtual care models within the Veterans Health Administration (VHA). She has pioneered frameworks for addressing social risks in healthcare systems and evaluated initiatives to bridge the digital divide affecting vulnerable populations. Notable contributions include studies on telehealth utilization patterns, tablet distribution programs, and strategies to enhance engagement among high-risk patients.
Awards and recognitions include her VA-funded Career Development Award, which supports her research into improving healthcare delivery systems. Her projects often involve interdisciplinary collaboration with clinicians, policymakers, and technologists to translate evidence into actionable interventions.
Dr. Zulman also focuses on anti-racism in clinical communication, developing frameworks like the 'Presence 5 for Racial Justice' to foster equitable patient-physician relationships. Her research extends to post-COVID-19 health outcomes, opioid prescription patterns, and mental health service utilization among veterans.
