Steven M. Asch is a Professor of Medicine at the Stanford University School of Medicine, with a courtesy appointment in Health Policy. He serves as Vice-Chief for Research in the Division of Primary Care and Population Health and Associate Chief of Staff for Clinical Effectiveness at the Palo Alto VA. His roles include Associate Dean for Research, overseeing programs like the KL2 Research Training Program and VA fellowships. Dr. Asch is an internist and palliative care physician with over 500 peer-reviewed publications, focusing on quality improvement, implementation science, and AI applications in healthcare. He has mentored over 80 students and clinicians.
Education: MD from UCSD (1988), MPH in Epidemiology from UCLA (1994), Diplomate in Internal Medicine and Palliative Care from the American Board of Internal Medicine. Awards include the PECASE (2004) and VA’s highest HSR&D honor (2019).
Research emphasizes organizational innovations in healthcare efficiency, palliative care, and disparities in obesity treatment. Recent work explores AI-driven tools for patient care prioritization and telehealth impact.
