Donn Schaefer is a Professor of Trombone and current Brass Area Head at the University of Utah School of Music. Originally from Vancouver, Canada, he previously taught low brass and jazz studies at the University of Mississippi before joining the University of Utah faculty. Schaefer holds a DMA in Trombone Performance and Pedagogy from the University of Iowa, an MM in Trombone Performance from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, and a BS in Music Education from Bemidji State University.
His research and performance interests focus on trombone performance, brass pedagogy, jazz studies, chamber music, and orchestral performance. Schaefer has established himself as a leading figure in trombone education through founding the MountainWest Trombone Workshop and hosting the International Trombone Festival. His creative work demonstrates significant engagement with diverse musical contexts from classical symphonic performance to Broadway theater and film scores.
Schaefer's recent creative output shows consistent engagement with the Utah Symphony Orchestra across multiple performance contexts including masterworks series, pops concerts, film scores, and educational outreach. He has also performed with major Broadway national tours including "Funny Girl" and "Mrs. Doubtfire." His work spans classical repertoire, film music, contemporary arrangements, and theatrical productions, demonstrating versatility across musical genres.

Schaefer has served in significant leadership roles including Brass Area Chair since 2006, Interim Director of Jazz Studies since 2018, and has received multiple teaching grants including a University Teaching Grant for Alto Trombone Purchase and a Brass Embouchure Specialist Residency. His service extends to the International Trombone Association where he chaired the Competitions Committee from 2012-2017.
As a performer, Schaefer maintains an active professional profile through the Utah Symphony Orchestra, Broadway national tours, and international collaborations including performances with the Cramer Trombone Choir in Russia, Sweden, Finland, and across the United States. His performance history includes major venues such as the Eccles Theater and Deer Valley Music Festival.
