Donald Ward is a Professor in the Division of Diabetes, Endocrinology & Gastroenterology at the Faculty of Biology, Medicine and Health, University of Manchester. He focuses on understanding the molecular mechanisms of extracellular calcium homeostasis via the calcium-sensing receptor (CaR) in parathyroid hormone (PTH) regulation, with implications for kidney disease and osteoporosis.
His research clarifies how CaR signaling pathways inhibit PTH secretion, stimulate secretion in other cells (thyroidal C-cells, pancreatic β cells), and regulate kidney ion transport. He investigates pharmacological CaR stimulation for treating secondary hyperparathyroidism in renal patients and CaR inhibition for osteoporosis therapy.
- Research Outputs: 85 publications (peer-reviewed articles, reviews, conference contributions).
- Key Collaborations: National and international institutions, including Harvard Medical School.
Scientific Awards:
- Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (SFHEA)
- Kidney Research UK Career Development Fellow (2002–2005)
As Deputy Director for Teaching and Learning (Biosciences), he contributes to academic leadership. His work aligns with UN Sustainable Development Goals, particularly health and well-being.
