Donald Gordon is a Professor of Politics and International Affairs at Furman University and the Founding Executive Director of the Riley Institute. He led the Riley Institute from 1999 to 2024, expanding it into a nationally prominent institute with 18 staff and over 30 programs focused on diversity, public education, and critical issues. He also served as Special Counsel to the Riley Institute and held roles in the U.S. House of Representatives during leaves from Furman.
- Education: B.A. and B.S. in Political Science/Psychology (University of South Florida), M.A. and Ph.D. in Political Science (University of Florida).
His research focuses on African and Middle Eastern politics, urban studies, and public education. He co-authored the influential textbook Understanding Contemporary Africa, now in its 5th edition, used globally in over 100 universities.
His publications emphasize African political dynamics and educational outreach, with the textbook shaping academic curricula and policy discussions.
- Awards: Multiple Maiden Awards, Furman’s Meritorius Teaching Award, Honorary Alumni Award, and Washington Center Leadership Recognition.
He advised Furman’s Urban Studies program and led study-away programs to Africa and the Middle East, fostering student engagement. His work at the Riley Institute integrated community development, education, and policy advocacy.
