Domingo Alfonso Martin Sanchez

Domingo Alfonso Martin Sanchez is an Associate Professor at the Polytechnic University of Madrid (UPM), specifically in the Department of Geological and Mining Engineering within the School of Mines and Energy Engineering. He currently serves as Director of the Official Laboratory for Construction Materials Testing (LOEMCO) since 2013 and holds the position of Contracted Doctor Professor. His career spans over three decades in both academic and professional settings, with significant contributions to geological engineering, geophysics, and construction materials research.

Professor Martin Sanchez's research focuses on the optimization of geophysical methodology across various applications, development of original algorithms for interpretation in applied geophysics, and the relationship between geophysical prospecting results and geomechanical and geochemical parameters of the subsurface. His work also encompasses soil contamination analysis using geophysical techniques, geological and hydrogeological prospecting, and educational innovation with a strong emphasis on social responsibility, service learning, and geoethics. He has established significant research collaborations across Iberoamerica, particularly with institutions in Cuba, Argentina, and Chile.

His publication record demonstrates a consistent focus on the application of geophysical methods to engineering problems, particularly in construction materials and environmental assessment. A significant portion of his recent work addresses sustainable development goals through educational innovation and service learning methodologies. His extensive research on pozzolanic materials, particularly zeolites from Spain and Latin America, has contributed to the understanding of alternative cementitious materials for sustainable construction.

Professor Martin Sanchez has held numerous administrative positions at UPM, including Coordinator for several engineering programs, Member of the School Board, University Assembly Member, Deputy Director for Quality and Social Responsibility (2010-2012), and Deputy Director for Economic Affairs, Infrastructure and Personnel (2019-2021). He is the Academic Director of the Unit for Social Entrepreneurship, Ethics and Values in Engineering (UESEVI) and coordinates several educational innovation groups focused on social responsibility in engineering education.

His technical expertise extends beyond academia, with approximately 250 technical projects in geophysical, geological, and geotechnical prospecting conducted between 1989 and 2007. These projects were primarily related to civil engineering infrastructure (highways, dams, airports), mining exploration, and water resource development, demonstrating his ability to bridge theoretical knowledge with practical applications.
