Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. Dieter Seebach is an Emeritus Full Professor at ETH Zürich, having served there since 1977 until his retirement in 2003. Previously, he held a Full Professorship at Justus Liebig University Giessen (1971–1977). His research focuses on organic synthesis, including umpolung of reactivity, enantioselective catalysis, natural product synthesis, and β-peptide chemistry. He has authored over 880 publications, supervised 148 PhD theses, and pioneered methodologies like TADDOL auxiliaries and SPEEF functional groups.
Education:
- B.S., 1961; Ph.D., 1964 (University of Karlsruhe, supervised by R. Criegee)
- Habilitation, 1969 (Karlsruhe)
- Postdoctoral Fellow with E.J. Corey at Harvard University (1965–1966)
Research Interests: Development of synthetic methods, natural product synthesis (macrodiolides, alkaloids), mechanistic studies (carbenoids, TiX4 catalysis), and chiral dendrimers. His work emphasizes umpolung, organolithium chemistry, and organocatalysis, with notable contributions to β-peptide chemistry and enzyme studies.
Awards and Honors:
- Over 10 prestigious awards, including the King Faisal Prize (1999), ACS Creative Work in Organic Synthesis Award (1992), and membership in the National Academy of Sciences (USA, foreign associate).
Advising and Labs: Mentor to 148 PhD students, many of whom hold academic or industrial leadership roles. His group’s research has been presented in >1,100 lectures globally and spans collaborations with institutions like Harvard, Cornell, and the Weizmann Institute.
Labs and Teams: Part of the Laboratory of Organic Chemistry at ETH Zurich, contributing to advancements in organic synthesis and chemical biology.
