Didier Zuniga is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Political Science at the University of Alberta. He holds affiliations with the Groupe de Recherche en Éthique Environnementale et Animale and previously served as a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Centre de Recherche en Éthique (Montreal) and McGill University's Department of Philosophy. Born and raised in Mexico City, his work focuses on reimagining political theory through ecological, decolonial, and feminist lenses.
Education: PhD in Political Theory from the University of Victoria (2020), SSHRC Postdoctoral Fellowships at McGill University (2020-2022) and the Centre de Recherche en Éthique (2022-2023).
Research interests center on extending ethics beyond anthropocentrism, engaging Mesoamerican metaphysics, and exploring intersections between Indigenous politics, disability studies, and critical animal studies. His work critiques colonial frameworks while advocating for ecologically grounded political thought.
Teaching: In Fall 2025, teaches POL S 410/514 'Aztec Political Thought' and POL S 302 'Topics in Political Theory: Nature.' Courses emphasize comparative political theory and environmental ethics.
Research emphasizes decolonizing methodologies, non-Western political thought, and ecological vulnerability. Current projects explore thought beyond human-animal binaries through Mesoamerican philosophy.
