Diane Phoenix-Neal serves as Associate Professor of Viola at the School of Music, James Madison University. An internationally acclaimed violist, she performs as a soloist and collaborative chamber musician across four continents, with appearances at prestigious venues including Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, and the Kennedy Center. She has held positions such as principal solo violist of Orchestre de Picardie in France and is a longstanding performer with the Shenandoah Valley Bach Festival.
Her educational background includes:
- Doctor of Musical Arts from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro
- Training at the Juilliard School under William Lincer and the Juilliard Quartet
- Studies at the University of North Carolina School of the Arts
Professor Phoenix-Neal is a dedicated advocate for contemporary viola music and works by underrepresented composers. Her research and performance interests encompass the expansion of viola repertoire through commissioning projects and recitals, which have been featured at events such as the International Viola Congresses, the American Viola Society Festival, and the Music by Women Festival. She also explores American spiritual traditions, as demonstrated by her recent CD "When the Spirit Sings" with Musica Harmonia, which features the chamber music of Gwyneth Walker.
In addition to her performance career, she is an active educator with over a decade of teaching experience internationally and at James Madison University. She is a member of the American Viola Society and has been a faculty member at the Eastern Music Festival. Her collaborative work extends to ensembles such as Musica Harmonia and Quatuor Joachim.
