American violist Matthew Lipman, associated with Stony Brook University, is celebrated for his "rich tone and elegant phrasing" (New York Times) and "splendid technique and musical sensitivity" (Chicago Tribune). He performs globally with prestigious ensembles such as the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Chamber Orchestra of Europe, and Ensemble Resonanz, and has recital credits at Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center. Lipman is a Wallach Chair member at the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center and performs in a string trio with Stella Chen and Brannon Cho.
His recordings include Sony Classical and Cedille Records releases, featuring world premieres of works by Shostakovich and Clarice Assad. He studied with Heidi Castleman at Juilliard and Tabea Zimmermann at Kronberg Academy, and performs on a 2021 Samuel Zygmuntowicz viola.
