Dr. Diana Riser is an Associate Professor of Psychology at Catawba College, previously serving as Professor and Associate Professor at Columbus State University. She holds a Ph.D. in Developmental & Biological Psychology from Virginia Tech, with a minor in Women’s & Gender Studies. Her research focuses on childhood adversity, resilience in trauma survivors, intergenerational maltreatment, and effective teaching strategies. She has authored numerous peer-reviewed publications and mentored over 30 undergraduate researchers. Key awards include the CSU Teaching Innovation Award and PROSE Award for Encyclopedia of Adolescence.
Education: B.A. in Psychology and Philosophy from University of Alabama in Huntsville (2003), M.S. and Ph.D. in Developmental & Biological Psychology from Virginia Tech (2009, 2011). Research areas span child development, trauma, parenting dynamics, and violence prevention. She teaches courses in human development, exceptionalities, and scholarship of teaching and learning. Grants include leadership in rape prevention programs and STEM initiatives.
Service includes roles as Tower Day Co-Coordinator, Quality Matters Subject Matter Expert, and community outreach in sexual violence prevention. Notable community collaborations include work with PAVE and Easter Seals. Her work bridges academic research with practical applications in education and mental health advocacy.
