As Director of the C.A.R.E. Lab (Lab Website), Dr. McDonnell specializes in autism research with intersecting interests in traumatic stress, developmental psychopathology, emotion socialization, and cognitive-behavioral interventions. Her work addresses critical gaps in understanding autism across the lifespan, including diagnostic disparities, suicide risk prevention, and intergenerational trauma effects.
Recent research trends show strong focus on autism diagnosis (predictors of clinician certainty), trauma psychology (child maltreatment, intergenerational trauma), and developmental mechanisms (emotion socialization, autobiographical memory). These studies employ both clinical and developmental psychology frameworks, emphasizing translational applications for clinical practice and prevention science.
Dr. McDonnell mentors graduate students Theresa Andrzejewski, Kate Breitenfeldt, Saily Gomez Batista, and Alison Tassone. She teaches Clinical Practicum and Developmental Psychopathology courses. Her lab (C.A.R.E. Lab) and Twitter @UWcareslab provide updates on ongoing research.
