Professor Diana Eccles serves as Dean of Medicine at the University of Southampton. She holds an MD from the University of Edinburgh (1992), following medical training at Manchester University (1983) and clinical specialization in oncology, clinical genetics, and general medicine across Manchester, Edinburgh, and Southampton. Her research focuses on genetic predisposition to cancer, particularly hereditary breast cancer management and the clinical translation of genetic variants.
She previously served as Director of the Southampton Clinical Trials Unit (2009–2014) and Head of Cancer Sciences (2015–2018). Currently, she chairs the MRC CARP panel and participates in UKRI REF evaluation (Main Panel A, SP1) and Norway's Centres of Excellence panel. Her leadership includes the UK POSH study (Chief Investigator) and the CanGene-CanVar CRUK Catalyst program (Co-Chief Investigator).
Research contributions emphasize improving shared decision-making in patient care and advancing genetic epidemiology. She maintains active involvement in national/international peer review and scientific policy.
