Dr. Dian Zijlmans is a Researcher and Teacher at Utrecht University's Faculty of Science, affiliated with the Department of Animal Behaviour and Cognition. Based at the Biomedical Primate Research Centre (BPRC) in Rijswijk, she coordinates research projects and teaches in the Biology bachelor program and Behavioural Ecology master track. She earned her PhD from Utrecht University in 2023 with a thesis titled 'Fat or fit: correlates, consequences and control of overweight in group-housed primates'.
Her research expertise spans:
- Primate behavior and welfare in captive environments
- Weight management and obesity correlates in non-human primates
- Housing condition impacts on physiological stress markers
- Non-invasive health monitoring techniques
- Captive management strategies for multigenerational groups
Zijlmans' publications demonstrate consistent focus on primate welfare optimization, with recent work examining:
- Weight management protocols through dietary interventions
- Stress biomarkers in relation to housing conditions
- Standardized health assessment methodologies
- Social behavior responses to environmental stimuli
- Diagnostic imaging applications in primate medicine
She collaborates extensively with the BPRC team on interdisciplinary projects integrating veterinary science, ethology, and conservation biology.
