Deshmukh Gopaul is a prominent researcher at Institut Pasteur, currently serving as Head of the Design for Biology Center since 2017. Previously, he was a Group Leader at Institut Pasteur from 2002-2017. His academic background includes a PhD in Biochemistry from Albert Einstein College of Medicine (1997), postdoctoral training at the University of Pennsylvania (1997-2001), and a Habilitation to Direct Research from University Paris Sud (2007).
His research spans molecular biology, biochemistry, and synthetic biology with a focus on DNA recombination mechanisms. Gopaul has made significant contributions to understanding site-specific recombination systems, particularly the Pf-Int recombinase in malaria parasites and integron systems in bacteria. His work has important implications for understanding genome plasticity, antibiotic resistance, and pathogen evolution.
His publication record shows a consistent research trajectory from structural studies of Cre-loxP recombination in the late 1990s through investigations of bacterial two-component systems and malaria parasite recombinases. His more recent work includes participation in iGEM synthetic biology competitions and collaborations on AI applications in life sciences.
Gopaul has been actively involved in educational initiatives at Institut Pasteur, particularly through the iGEM competition where he has mentored student teams since 2015. He continues to be an active researcher, with upcoming workshops scheduled for 2025 on AI applications in neuroscience and life sciences.
