معرفی
Sebastian Baumgarten is the Head of the 'Parasite RNA Biology' Group at the Institut Pasteur, France, a position he has held since June 2021. He is affiliated with the Department of Biology of Host-Parasite Interactions. Previously, he was a post-doctoral researcher at the same institute from 2016 to 2021.
His educational background includes a Ph.D. (2013–2016) and MSc (2012–2013) from the Red Sea Research Center at King Abdullah University of Science and Technology, Saudi Arabia, and a BSc (2009–2012) from the University of Tübingen, Germany.
His research centers on RNA biology in malaria parasites, particularly focusing on RNA modifications such as m6A and tRNA methylation, epigenetic regulation, and post-transcriptional gene control in Plasmodium falciparum. He employs advanced genomic techniques including CRISPR, RNAseq, and ChIPseq to study gene regulation and immune evasion mechanisms in protozoan parasites.
His recent publications reveal a strong trend in understanding how RNA modifications influence parasite development, stress response, and antigenic variation. His work bridges molecular parasitology with epitranscriptomics, contributing significantly to the understanding of gene regulation in malaria parasites.
Notable scientific contributions include studies published in Nature Microbiology, mBio, EMBO Reports, and Life Science Alliance, focusing on m6A methylation, RUF6 ncRNA interactions, and cohesin-mediated gene repression.
He has supervised or collaborated with several researchers including post-doctoral fellows, PhD students, and technicians within his team. His group is actively involved in uncovering the molecular mechanisms of parasite survival and immune evasion, with potential implications for antimalarial drug and vaccine development.
The 'Parasite RNA Biology' group operates within the Institut Pasteur's ecosystem, leveraging interdisciplinary platforms for genomics, imaging, and functional analysis to advance understanding of malaria parasite biology.
