Derek Oler is a Professor of Accounting at Texas Tech University's Rawls College of Business. Holding a CPA designation in the US and a Canadian CPA/CA, he earned his PhD in Management (Accounting major) from Cornell University (2004) and a Bachelor of Commerce from the University of Alberta (1994). Previously, he served as an assistant professor at Indiana University (2004–2009) before joining Texas Tech as a chaired associate professor, where he was promoted to full professor in 2020.

Research Interests focus on mergers and acquisitions, cash and stock performance, and earnings manipulation. His work explores predictive power of corporate cash levels, accruals anomalies, deferred tax accounting, and the application of AI in accounting education. Recent projects include analyzing earnings management through net operating asset growth and examining academic accounting career mobility.
