Derek Johnston is a Lecturer at Queen's University Belfast, specializing in the history of genres in media, particularly science fiction and horror. His research explores the intersection of television, seasons, and cultural identity, with a focus on Gothic modes and historical narratives. He is the editor of Nigel Kneale and Horror and has contributed to journals like Journal of Popular Television.
He has supervised doctoral students, including Dr. Portia Ellis-Woods and Dr. Aislinn Clarke. His work has been recognized with the Eaton Fellowship (2015/16). Johnston is a member of the Centre for Public History and the British Association of Film, Television and Screen Studies (BAFTSS).
Research Interests: Television, radio, film genres; science fiction and horror; historical dramas; nostalgia and identity. He frequently engages with media analysis, contributing to public lectures and academic conferences worldwide.
