Dr. Derek Hird is a Senior Lecturer in Chinese Studies and Head of the School of Global Affairs at Lancaster University. His expertise spans Chinese Studies, Intercultural Communication, Gender Studies, and LGBTQIA+ Politics. He teaches courses on Sinophone culture, transnational media, and academic writing in Chinese, emphasizing cultural identity and global perspectives. His research focuses on Chinese masculinities, transnational identities, and intercultural pedagogy, with notable work on Confucian values, professional mobility, and queer studies. He leads the Culture and Communication Research Network, advises PhD students, and collaborates on projects like the Faculty of Arts Internationalisation Fund. His publications explore topics such as gendered subjectivity, cultural nationalism, and the intersection of language education with identity.
