Dr. Derek Bousfield is a Reader in Pragmatics and Communication at Manchester Metropolitan University (MMU), where he also serves as Co-Director of The Manchester Centre for Research in Linguistics. He previously led the Department of Languages, Information and Communications (2013–2023), establishing the Linguistics and Journalism programs, revamping The Language Centre, and co-founding the iSchool. His research focuses on pragmatics, stylistics, and impoliteness theory, with notable contributions to understanding aggression, hate speech, and online trolling. He collaborates on projects like 'Gaslighting: Using Language in Coercion and Control' and 'Towards a Language of Stochastic Terrorism (LOST).
His work bridges theoretical linguistics and applied discourse analysis, addressing societal impacts of communication through debates and policy contributions. He teaches using innovative methods emphasizing critical thinking and global communication skills. Key publications include Impoliteness in Interaction (2008) and co-edited volumes on impoliteness theory. He actively engages with media discourse, film studies, and pedagogical approaches to stylistics.
Dr. Bousfield’s research extends to humor, narrative analysis, and cross-cultural pragmatics, with a focus on interactional dynamics and power structures in communication. His recent projects explore linguistic strategies in coercion and stochastic terrorism, reflecting an interdisciplinary approach to contemporary societal challenges.
