Der-lin Chao is a Professor in the Department of Classical and Oriental Studies at Hunter College, City University of New York, within the School of Arts and Sciences. She serves as Director of the Chinese Division and the Chinese Flagship Program, and has led the Chinese Program since 1998.

Her research focuses on applied linguistics and Chinese language pedagogy, particularly in the areas of multimedia instruction, blended learning, curriculum development, and K–16 articulation. She has pioneered innovative approaches to second language acquisition and heritage language education.
Dr. Chao has secured and directed multiple federally funded initiatives, including grants from the U.S. Department of Education, STARTALK, and the National Security Education Program’s Flagship initiative. These projects have advanced Chinese literacy instruction through technology integration and systemic curriculum reform.
