Dennis Kardon is an accomplished American painter and art critic currently teaching at the School of Visual Arts in New York. Born in Des Moines, Iowa in 1950, he holds a BA in Visual Arts from Yale University (1973) and participated in the Whitney Museum Independent Study Program. Kardon maintains an active studio practice in Brooklyn while contributing to the art education community.
His artistic practice spans over five decades, beginning with black and white cut-paper pieces in the 1970s, progressing to woodblock prints featured in a 1983 MoMA exhibition, and evolving into the psychological figurative paintings for which he is best known. Kardon's work exists in various stages of formation and disarticulation, combining realism with abstraction through economical brushstrokes and palette knife techniques. His paintings draw from influences including Manet, Picabia, and Guston while maintaining a distinctive voice in contemporary representational painting.
Kardon's writings on contemporary artists including Roe Ethridge, Cindy Sherman, Carroll Dunham, Charline Von Heyl, Francis Picabia, Al Held, Eric Fischl and Jasper Johns have appeared in major publications such as Artforum, Artnet, Art in America, Hyperallergic, Artcritical, and The Brooklyn Rail. His critical perspective reflects his deep engagement with the conceptual and technical aspects of contemporary art practice.
