Professor Dennis Francis is a Professor of Education (Culture, Literacies, Inclusion & Pedagogy) at the University of Glasgow. Previously, he held roles as Professor of Sociology at Stellenbosch University, Dean of Education at the University of the Free State, and Head of School at the University of KwaZulu-Natal. He earned a PhD in Sociology and a master’s in Education for Social Justice, focusing on identity, intersectionality, inequality, and marginalisation in youth and schooling. His research critiques cisheteronormativity and advances social justice through queer studies frameworks.
Key research interests include genders, sexualities, and schooling; anti-oppressive education; queer activism; and health and relationship education. He has authored books such as Queer Activism in South African Education and Troubling the Teaching and Learning of Gender and Sexuality Diversity. He has received prestigious awards, including the Education Association of South Africa’s Medal of Honour (2014) and a Stellenbosch University Teaching Fellowship (2022).
Professor Francis has supervised over 35 doctoral and master’s students and teaches graduate courses on social justice, queer feminism, and the sociology of youth. His grants include funding from the National Research Foundation and European Union for projects on diversity and education.
He serves on editorial boards for journals like the British Journal of Sociology of Education and Journal of LGBT Youth, and has delivered keynote addresses globally, including at the Nordic Education Research Association and Thailand’s Teacher Council.
