Denise A. Galloway is a Professor and Scientific Director at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center (Fred Hutch) in Seattle, WA. She holds appointments in both the Human Biology Division and Public Health Sciences Division, and serves as the Paul Stephanus Memorial Endowed Chair. Her research focuses on the mechanisms by which human papillomaviruses (HPVs) and Merkel Cell polyomavirus (MCPyV) contribute to epithelial cancers, particularly cervical, head/neck, and Merkel cell carcinomas. She is also a member of the Immunotherapy and Translational Data Science Integrated Research Centers at Fred Hutch.
- Key Research Areas: HPV oncogenes, telomerase activation (hTERT), DNA repair disruption, MCPyV tumor antigens, and UV-induced apoptosis inhibition
- Scientific Impact: Pioneering work on HPV vaccines, including demonstrating that single HPV proteins form virus-like particles for noninfectious vaccines
Her publications (2016-2021) reveal trends in HPV-related carcinogenesis, DNA repair pathway interference, and MCPyV diagnostics. She has developed serologic assays for HPV/MCPyV antibodies and leads vaccine dosage optimization studies.
- Awards: Elected Fellow of American Association for Cancer Research Academy (2022)
- Leadership: Scientific Director of Pathogen-Associated Malignancies Integrated Research Center
Dr. Galloway's work bridges basic virology, translational epidemiology, and clinical applications, aiming to reduce global pathogen-associated cancer burdens through vaccine innovation and pathogen-cancer association studies.
