Dr Denis Shaw is an Honorary Senior Research Fellow at the School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences, University of Birmingham. He holds a BA and PhD in his field.

Research Interests
Dr Shaw specializes in the historical geography of Russia, focusing on the evolution of geographical and environmental sciences in imperial and Soviet contexts. His work examines:
- The contested canon of Russian and Soviet geography (1884–1953)
- Biogeochemical concepts in the Soviet era, particularly contributions from scholars like Vernadsky
- Ethnic mapping practices in Tsarist Russia (1800–1914)
- Scientific rivalries in Stalinist academia
Recent Publications
His publications include a 2015 Routledge book on Russian environmental thought, peer-reviewed articles on Soviet wartime geography, and chapters in edited volumes like Understanding Contemporary Russia.
