Dr Isabelle Carter is an Assistant Professor in Modern British History at the Department of History, University of Birmingham. Her research focuses on oral history and lived experiences of place-based and welfare inequalities in late twentieth-century Britain.

Her work examines intersections of social history, welfare policies, and urban environments. Recent projects explore ethical challenges in oral history and neurodivergent perspectives in post-war British institutions. She teaches undergraduate and postgraduate courses including Practising History, Public History, and Global Cold War studies.
Recent publications (2019-2025) span oral history ethics, neurodiversity in institutional memory, and urban social dynamics. Themes include methodological innovation, marginalized voices, and policy impacts on everyday life.
