Denis Jiron serves as Assistant Professor of Trombone within the Music Performance Studies department at Western University's Don Wright Faculty of Music. A highly versatile performer, he maintains an active dual career in academia and professional performance across classical, jazz, pop, and Afro-Cuban genres with major orchestras and internationally renowned artists.
His academic credentials include:

Dr. Jiron's research centers on cross-genre trombone performance practices, with specialized expertise in classical orchestral techniques, jazz improvisation frameworks, and Afro-Cuban rhythmic structures. His scholarly work integrates practical performance experience with brass pedagogy, particularly examining stylistic adaptation across musical traditions. As founder of the Rumbankete Afro-Cuban orchestra, he contributes significantly to Latin music scholarship through performance-based research.
He received the University Distinguished Fellowship at Michigan State University, recognizing exceptional scholarly achievement during doctoral studies.
Dr. Jiron founded and directs the Afro-Cuban orchestra Rumbankete (established 2004), which released its debut album in 2011. He maintains active ensemble leadership while serving as a Conn-Selmer (Vincent Bach) Performing Artist, endorsing professional brass instruments through performance collaborations and educational clinics.
