Deirdre Shaw is Professor of Consumer Ethics and Sustainability in the Management department at the University of Glasgow's Adam Smith Business School. She serves as Associate Director of the Centre for Sustainable Solutions and is a member of the Marketing research cluster. Her work bridges business ethics, consumer behavior, and sustainability research with practical applications for ethical consumption.
Professor Shaw's research focuses on consumption ethics, with particular expertise in sustainable and ethical fashion, modern slavery in supply chains, care in consumption practices, and sustainable food systems. Her interdisciplinary approach combines insights from marketing, sociology, and business ethics to address critical issues in contemporary consumption patterns. She explores how consumers navigate ethical dilemmas, the psychological barriers to ethical consumption, and the potential for systemic change through consumer action.
Her recent publications demonstrate a strong focus on modern slavery awareness, sustainable fashion practices, and community-based approaches to sustainability. Shaw's work often examines the gap between ethical intentions and actual consumer behavior, while also exploring innovative solutions like digital tools for wardrobe management and circular economy models in clothing consumption.
Professor Shaw has secured significant research funding including ESRC awards for her seminar series on Ethics in Consumption, Digitalising Sustainable Clothing Consumption projects, and research on Modern Slavery consumer perspectives. She has also led projects related to community food hubs and sustainable communities of care in Glasgow.
She actively supervises PhD researchers in the field of consumption ethics and has contributed extensively to academic discourse through publications in top journals including Journal of Business Ethics, British Journal of Management, Journal of Consumer Culture, and Work, Employment and Society.
