Prof. Debra Austin is Professor of the Practice of Law at the University of Denver Sturm College of Law, recognized with the University of Denver Distinguished Teaching Award (2019) and Civility in Practice Award (2023). Her interdisciplinary work bridges neuroscience, psychology, and legal practice to enhance lawyer well-being and cognitive performance.
Her research investigates neurobiological impacts of chronic stress on legal professionals, developing evidence-based strategies for resilience building, cognitive enhancement, and ethical practice. She pioneered the application of nutritional neuroscience, mindfulness practices, and emotional regulation techniques in legal education and professional development.
Prof. Austin's publications, including the seminal book 'The Legal Brain,' establish frameworks for transforming legal culture through well-being initiatives. Her work with the ABA National Task Force on Lawyer Well-being has shaped industry-wide reforms addressing substance misuse, systemic bias in evaluations, and institutional practices that undermine cognitive wellness.
