Susan Salmon serves as Director of Legal Writing and Clinical Professor of Law at the University of Arizona's James E. Rogers College of Law. She coaches ABA National Appellate Advocacy Competition teams and oversees the writing-fellow program. Her research focuses on legal education's impact on justice access, professional bias, and rhetoric's role in legal training.
Education: J.D. from University of California, Hastings College of the Law (2000, magna cum laude, Order of the Coif); B.A. from UCLA (1993). Admitted to practice in Arizona (2006) and California (2000).
Research emphasizes legal writing pedagogy, advocacy training, and improving lawyer well-being through curriculum design. Her column The Legal Word in Arizona Attorney magazine explores practical writing challenges. She co-authored the Legal Writing Institute’s Moot Court Advisors Handbook and presents globally on legal education topics.
Awards include the 2020 Edith Sayre Auslander Visionary Award and 2009 Arizona Daily Star '40 Under 40.' Active in professional service, she chairs national legal-writing conferences and serves on boards of the Association of Legal Writing Directors and Legal Writing Institute. She also leads community initiatives through the Arizona Women Lawyers Association and Humane Society of Southern Arizona.
