Deborah Niven is a Senior Lecturer at the Sheffield Institute of Education, part of Sheffield Hallam University's College of Social Sciences and Arts. She specializes in English education and teacher training, leading modules on the Secondary English PGCE and BA Primary Education (5-11) programs. Her teaching focuses on curriculum design, pedagogy, and fostering student-centered learning environments through dialogue and literacy development.
Prior to academia, Niven spent 18 years as a secondary school English teacher in South Yorkshire, holding leadership roles and coordinating Initial Teacher Training. Her research critiques deficit-oriented educational policies in reading practices and emphasizes learner autonomy's role in adolescent motivation and self-efficacy. She contributes to broader educational initiatives, including Trauma Informed Schools training and whole-school oracy strategies.
Niven also supervises Master's dissertations in the Teach First MA Leadership in Learning program. Her work is affiliated with the Social and Economic Research Institute, exploring intersections between pedagogy, policy, and student agency.
