Deborah Diercks

Deborah Diercks, M.D., is a distinguished Professor and Chair of the Department of Emergency Medicine at UT Southwestern Medical Center, holding the Audre and Bernard Rapoport Distinguished Chair in Clinical Care and Research. She leads one of the nation’s largest emergency medicine programs spanning Parkland Memorial Hospital and UT Southwestern University Hospitals. Her academic roles include Senior Associate Editor of the Annals of Emergency Medicine.

Dr. Diercks’ education comprises a microbiology/immunology degree from UC Berkeley, an MD from Tufts University School of Medicine, and a residency at the University of Cincinnati. She earned a master’s in public health from Harvard University. Her career includes faculty contributions to the University of California, Davis emergency medicine programs and leadership in the Society for Academic Emergency Medicine.

Her research focuses on acute coronary syndromes, gender-based symptom differences, and cardiac biomarkers. Key studies include optimizing reperfusion times for myocardial infarction patients and evaluating diagnostic protocols using troponin and copeptin. NIH-funded work drives advancements in emergency cardiovascular care and patient outcomes.

Dr. Diercks has received the 2014 Advancement of Women in Academic Emergency Medicine Award. Her grants include NIH support for biomarker research and clinical trial leadership (e.g., CHOPIN trial). She advocates for emergency medicine education standards and clinician-educator scholarship. Her work spans translational research to clinical policy, emphasizing evidence-based practices and health equity.

Administratively, she oversees UT Southwestern’s emergency medicine programs, integrating clinical care, education, and research. Her teams address urgent cardiovascular emergencies, syncope management, and hypertension crises. Collaborative efforts with national registries (e.g., NCDR) inform best practices for acute cardiac conditions.
