Dawn M. Wenzel, PhD is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Biochemistry at the Medical College of Wisconsin's School of Medicine. She is also a member of the Cancer Center at MCW. Dr. Wenzel's academic journey includes a B.S. from the University of Wisconsin-Madison (2000-2004), a Ph.D. from the University of Washington-Seattle (2004-2010), and postdoctoral training at the University of Utah School of Medicine (2011-2020) before joining MCW in October 2020.
Dr. Wenzel's research focuses on ubiquitin signaling pathways, particularly the ESCRT machinery and its role in cell division processes like cytokinetic abscission. Her work also investigates O-GlcNAc cycling in neurodevelopment and associated diseases, as well as the biochemical and structural properties of ubiquitin-conjugating enzymes. Her research has significant implications for understanding cancer biology, neurodegenerative diseases, and fundamental cellular processes.
Analysis of her publication record reveals a consistent focus on protein modification pathways, with particular expertise in ubiquitination mechanisms and ESCRT-mediated membrane dynamics. Her work spans structural biochemistry, cell biology, and disease mechanisms, demonstrating an interdisciplinary approach to understanding fundamental cellular processes.
- 2010 Schultz Travel Fellowship, University of Washington Department of Biochemistry
- 2017 Postdoctoral Travel Award, University of Utah Graduate School
Dr. Wenzel has demonstrated strong research productivity with publications in high-impact journals including Nature, PNAS, and eLife. Her previous American Cancer Society grant as Principal Investigator (2014-2016) indicates her ability to secure competitive funding. She appears to maintain active collaborations with researchers at multiple institutions, as evidenced by her co-authorship patterns.
