Dawn L Hershman

Dawn L Hershman is the Witten Family Professor of Medicine, American Cancer Society Professor of Medicine and Epidemiology, Chief of the Division of Hematology/Oncology, and Deputy Director of the Herbert Irving Comprehensive Cancer Center at Columbia University. She has developed nationally recognized expertise in breast cancer treatment, prevention, and survivorship.

Dr. Hershman's educational background includes:

• Medical degree from Albert Einstein College of Medicine, Yeshiva University
• Internship at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/Columbia University Medical Center
• Fellowship at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/Columbia University Medical Center (served as Chief Resident)
• Master's degree in Biostatistics at the Mailman School of Public Health

Dr. Hershman has developed a comprehensive multidisciplinary program focused on improving cancer care delivery, reducing disparities, and enhancing quality of life for breast cancer survivors. Her research spans clinical trials in breast cancer treatment and prevention, supportive care, and cancer survivorship. She has published over 450 scientific articles with recent work focusing on fertility preservation in endometrial cancer, exercise and nutrition interventions for breast cancer patients, endocrine therapy approaches, opioid use for cancer pain, and neoadjuvant therapies for breast cancer.

Her recent publications demonstrate a strong focus on evidence-based clinical guidelines, patient-centered outcomes research, and addressing health disparities in cancer care. The work spans clinical trials, systematic reviews, and meta-analyses addressing critical issues in oncology practice.

Dr. Hershman has received numerous prestigious awards including:

As a dedicated mentor, Dr. Hershman has guided numerous faculty members who have received mentored career development awards. Her research has been supported by major funding organizations including the National Cancer Institute, American Cancer Society, Department of Defense, Breast Cancer Research Foundation, PCORI, Susan Komen Foundation, Avon Foundation, and National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine. She serves in national leadership roles including as Vice Chair of the SWOG Cancer Research Network overseeing the NCI's Community Oncology Research Programs, and has held key positions within ASCO including Chair of the Grants Selection Committee and Chair of the ASCO Quality Care Symposium.

Dr. Hershman directs a comprehensive breast oncology program and leads initiatives focused on improving cancer care delivery and reducing health disparities through multidisciplinary collaboration.
