David Wood is a Professor and former Director (2016-2022) of the School of Linguistics and Language Studies at Carleton University. He holds a BA from the University of Prince Edward Island, MEd from the University of Ottawa, and a PhD from the University of Ottawa. His academic career spans multiple institutions including the University of Victoria, Kyoto Sangyo University, and Algonquin College. He has also served as a consultant for Canadian governmental education initiatives.
Research focuses on formulaic language acquisition, second language speech fluency, and teacher education. He has authored influential books such as Fundamentals of Formulaic Language and Formulaic Language and Second Language Speech Fluency. His work explores the role of lexical chunks in fluency development and pedagogical applications in TESOL and EAP contexts.
Professional awards include the Capital Educators Award (2009) and Carleton’s Graduate Mentoring Award (2015). He has held visiting positions at York University, the University of Auckland, and Temple University Japan, where he delivered distinguished lectures on applied linguistics topics.
Wood’s academic contributions include over 30 peer-reviewed publications, special journal issues as guest editor, and international conference presentations. His teaching spans university and community programs in Canada, Greece, and Japan, emphasizing practical language instruction and teacher training methodologies.
