David Strain is an Associate Professor of Cardiometabolic Health at the University of Exeter Medical School. His key roles include: Head of the academic department for healthcare for older adults; Chair of the British Medical Association’s Board of Science; Inaugural Thematic Research Lead for Health to the Parliamentary Office of Science and Technology (appointed September 2024); and Academic lead for healthcare for older adults and stroke departments.
His research focuses on optimizing diabetes care for older adults through individualized treatment targets and understanding medication mechanisms beyond glycemic control. He pioneered Europe's first feasibility study for personalized diabetes targets in aging populations, directly shaping UK clinical guidelines for diabetes and frailty. His work extends to Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (ME/CFS), where he leads Health Education England's national improvement programs, and Long COVID, where he serves on NHS taskforces and advises Parliament.
Prof. Strain supervises multidisciplinary teams including geriatricians, cardiologists, and basic scientists. With presentations in 110+ countries, he is renowned for translating complex science into accessible policy-relevant insights. His clinical work spans community diabetes services for elderly patients, inpatient stroke consultancy, and ME/CFS specialist care through the Royal Devon & Exeter NHS Foundation Trust.
