Professor Ruth E. Hubbard is the Masonic Chair of Geriatric Medicine at the University of Queensland and a Consultant Geriatrician at the Princess Alexandra Hospital. She serves as Program Lead for Ageing and Geriatric Medicine and is an Affiliate of the Centre for Health Services Research. Her work bridges clinical practice, research, and teaching in geriatric medicine with a strong focus on frailty assessment and management.
Dr. Hubbard qualified from St Mary's Hospital Medical School in London and completed her training in general internal medicine and geriatric medicine in Cardiff, Wales. She holds an MSc in Medical Education, an MD on pathophysiological changes in frail older people, and completed a post-doctoral fellowship at Dalhousie University, Nova Scotia with Professor Ken Rockwood. Her educational background has positioned her as a leader in geriatric research and clinical practice.
Professor Hubbard's research primarily focuses on frailty across multiple dimensions - its inflammatory etiology, measurement challenges in clinical practice, and relationships with obesity, smoking, socioeconomic status, and exercise. Based on the impact of her publications, she is currently ranked number 4 in a list of frailty experts worldwide. Her work spans diverse areas including dementia care, chronic kidney disease management in older adults, geriatric oncology, heart failure in older patients, and developing digital education tools for frailty assessment.
Her extensive publication record includes 186 journal articles, 7 book chapters, 89 conference papers, and 1 research report. Recent work shows a strong emphasis on patient-centered outcomes, comprehensive geriatric assessment applications across specialties, and developing practical tools for frailty measurement in clinical settings. Her research consistently integrates multidisciplinary perspectives, bringing together geriatricians, nephrologists, oncologists, cardiologists, mental health specialists, and patient representatives.
Professor Hubbard has secured substantial research funding, generating $24.5M in grant income over the last 5 years as Chief Investigator A on major projects including the MRFF Dementia Ageing and Aged Care Mission ($5M), a Centre for Research Excellence in Frailty ($2.5M), an Ideas Grant ($1.6M), and the NHMRC Targeted Call for Frailty Research ($1.5M).
As Founder and Director of the Australia Frailty Network (AFN), she leads a multidisciplinary team of consumer partners, clinical academics, behavioral psychologists, and statisticians addressing critical questions in frailty measurement and management. Her leadership extends to developing national consensus statements and clinical guidelines that translate frailty research into practical clinical applications across multiple medical specialties.
