Chris Moran is an Associate Professor of Health Services Research at the School of Public Health and Preventive Medicine, Monash University. He is also a practicing geriatrician at Alfred Health and serves as Course Coordinator for the Master of Health Management and Master of Health Administration programs at Monash. His research focuses on the links between cardiometabolic disease and brain health, with strong expertise in epidemiology and neuroimaging in aging populations.
Education:
- Medicine, MB BCh BAO, Queen's University Belfast
- PhD in Medicine, School of Clinical Sciences at Monash Health
His research interests are centered on geriatrics, dementia, diabetes, and health services research, particularly in understanding how cardiometabolic conditions influence cognitive decline and brain aging. He employs large-scale datasets and neuroimaging techniques to explore modifiable risk factors and develop evidence-based interventions. His work bridges clinical and academic domains, with a focus on implementation science to improve health service delivery for older adults.
Recent publications show a consistent trend in exploring glycemic variability, lipid profiles, fitness, and obesity as predictors of cognitive outcomes in aging and diabetes. His work frequently involves large cohort studies and randomized trials such as STAREE and CLARiFY, contributing to preventive strategies in cardiovascular and cognitive health.
Scientific Awards:
- Baker Heart & Diabetes Institute Prize for Diabetes Research (2023)
- Career Investigator Award (2013)
- Henry Krum Award for Mid Career Research Excellence (2024)
- Peter Bladin New Investigator Award (2012)
- RM Gibson Young Investigator Award (2012)
Chris Moran actively contributes to research grants and advising, serving as a Chief or Associate Investigator on multiple projects funded by the NHMRC, NIH, and Medical Research Futures Fund. He is Chair of the Scientific and Research sub-committee of the Australian and New Zealand Society of Geriatric Medicine and a member of the management committee of the Australasian Journal on Ageing, demonstrating leadership in both research and academic governance. His work significantly contributes to UN Sustainable Development Goals related to health and well-being.
He is involved in collaborative research networks and leads projects focused on improving care for older adults, including perioperative assessment (COPE), medication safety for CALD patients, and lifelong brain health in diabetes. These initiatives reflect a strong commitment to equitable, evidence-based, and patient-centered healthcare innovation.
