David Stewart serves as Associate Dean of Assessment & Academic Affairs and Professor of Pharmacy Practice at East Tennessee State University's Bill Gatton College of Pharmacy. Originally from Roan Mountain, Tennessee, he joined the Department of Pharmacy Practice faculty in 2007 after previously teaching at Auburn University Harrison School of Pharmacy.

Dr. Stewart's research and clinical work focuses primarily on anticoagulation and cardiovascular pharmacotherapy, with significant contributions to understanding bleeding risks associated with anticoagulants like rivaroxaban in orthopedic surgery patients. He has also conducted important research on active learning methodologies in pharmacy education, particularly examining how student self-testing impacts examination performance. His work bridges clinical pharmacy practice with innovative educational approaches.
His publication record demonstrates a dual focus on clinical pharmacology research related to anticoagulation therapy and educational research in pharmacy education. The clinical work examines practical applications and outcomes of anticoagulation therapies in real-world settings compared to clinical trial data, while his educational research investigates effective learning strategies for pharmacy students.

Dr. Stewart has held significant administrative roles including Vice Chair for the Department of Pharmacy Practice, Residency Program Director for the PGY2 Internal Medicine Pharmacy Residency Program, and Post-graduate Training Coordinator. He has been actively involved in professional organizations, having served as member and past chair of the American College of Clinical Pharmacy Member Relations Committee and as past member and chair of Southeastern Residency Conference Steering Committee. His organizational memberships include AACP, ACCP, and ASHP.
He maintains active involvement in both clinical practice (previously with the ETSU Department of Family Medicine at Johnson City Medical Center) and teaching, having instructed courses including Pharmacotherapy, Advanced Clinical Practice Skills, Cardiovascular Integrated Series, and electives in Anticoagulation and Professional Development.
