David Schneiderman is Professor of Law and Political Science at the Faculty of Law, University of Toronto. He holds a B.A. from McGill University (1980), LL.B. from Windsor (1983), and LL.M. from Queen’s (1993). He was called to the Bar of British Columbia in 1984 and has held leadership roles including Research Director of the Canadian Civil Liberties Association and Executive Director of the Centre for Constitutional Studies at the University of Alberta.
His research focuses on Canadian constitutional law, international investment law, constitutional theory, and globalization. He explores the intersection of law, politics, and democracy, particularly in the context of economic globalization and judicial power. His work critically examines the legitimacy, depoliticization, and democratic accountability of international investment arbitration and constitutional governance.
His recent publications analyze themes such as academic freedom, parliamentary resilience against illiberal executives, multiculturalism, and the colonial legacies of investment law. He is a founding editor of the Constitutional Forum Constitutionnel and the Review of Constitutional Studies, and his scholarship appears in leading journals including the University of Toronto Law Journal and Northwestern Journal of International Law & Business.
His books include Constitutionalizing Economic Globalization: Investment Rules and Democracy's Promise (Cambridge University Press, 2008) and co-authored The Last Word: Media Coverage of the Supreme Court of Canada (UBC Press, 2006). He has also edited several volumes on constitutionalism, freedom of expression, and social justice.
Professor Schneiderman has been actively involved in public discourse, contributing opinion pieces to The Globe and Mail and National Post, and maintaining a blog on constitutional issues. He has collaborated with scholars such as Anver M. Emon, Jane Kelsey, and Gus Van Harten on issues of academic freedom and international investment law reform.
