David Roger Ibbett is an Assistant Teaching Professor in the Humanities & Arts department at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI). He is a composer, educator, and advocate for science-art fusion, directing the Multiverse Concert Series which combines music and scientific research into immersive performances. His work bridges classical and electronic music with scientific disciplines like astrophysics, planetary science, and environmental science.
Education: MA from Clare College, Cambridge; MMus from Guildhall School of Music and Drama; PhD from University of Birmingham.
Research focuses on electrosymphonic composition inspired by scientific data visualization, including sonification of exoplanet spectra, black hole phenomena, and climate data. Key projects include the Black Hole Symphony (2021), Mars Symphony (2023), and album Octave of Light (2020). Collaborators include institutions like Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics, MIT, NASA JPL, and Fermilab.
Professional highlights include being Fermilab's first Guest Composer (2020-2021) and Harvard-Smithsonian's first Resident Composer (2023). His work has been featured in Nature, New Scientist, Boston Globe, and WGBH Public Radio.
