David Pellman is the Maragaret M. Dyson Professor of Pediatric Oncology and Professor of Cell Biology at Harvard Medical School, with a concurrent role as an Investigator at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (since 2008). He leads the Pellman Lab at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, focusing on mechanisms of cell division and genome instability in cancer. His academic appointments include roles at the Broad Institute (Associate Member since 2011) and Dana-Farber (Ted Williams Senior Investigator since 2003).
Education:
- Fellow in Medicine (Hematology/Oncology), Children's Hospital Boston (MA)
- Postdoctoral Fellow, Whitehead Institute/MIT (Advisor: Gerald Fink)
- MD with honors, University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine (Research Advisor: Hidesaburo Hanafusa)
- AB in Biology, University of Chicago
Research Focus: Studies how errors in cell division drive genomic abnormalities in cancer, particularly aneuploidy and asymmetric cell division. Combines genetic, cell biological, and biochemical approaches to understand mechanisms of mitotic fidelity and tumor evolution.
Awards/Honors:
- 2023: Elected to American Academy of Arts & Sciences
- 2014: MERIT Award (NIH)
- 2008: HHMI Investigator
- Multiple leadership roles at major conferences and institutions
Advancing Science: Served as Chair of Gordon Research Conferences (2011), delivered keynote addresses globally, and mentors early-career scientists through awards like the Damon Runyon and Kimmel Scholar programs.
Labs/Teams: Directs the Pellman Lab at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, a multidisciplinary team investigating cancer cell biology with a focus on mitotic mechanisms.
