David Orton is a Professor of Zooarchaeology at the University of York, where he directs the MSc in Zooarchaeology. His research focuses on Neolithic Balkans, medieval fishing, and commensal fauna, with a particular emphasis on integrating biomolecular methods and large-scale data synthesis. He leads the RATTUS project exploring rats' role in European history and coordinates the SeaChanges ITN, a marine archaeology and biology training network.
Orton holds a BA from the University of Cambridge, an MSc from York, and a PhD from Cambridge (2008). His fieldwork includes Çatalhöyük (Turkey) and the Vinča culture in Serbia, alongside projects in Turkey, the Balkans, and Northwest Europe. He has supervised numerous PhD projects and contributed to over 70 publications.
His teaching spans undergraduate and postgraduate levels, emphasizing zooarchaeological identification and data analysis. Orton is active in editorial roles, including Assistant Reviews Editor for the European Journal of Archaeology, and frequently presents at international conferences. His work bridges archaeology with environmental science, aiming to inform modern biodiversity conservation through historical data.
