Associate Professor David Oliver is Head of the Discipline of Strategy, Innovation and Entrepreneurship at the University of Sydney Business School. He holds a BA (Hons) from the University of Waterloo, an MBA from York University, and a PhD from the University of Lausanne. His research explores organizational identity and its strategic implications across diverse contexts such as start-ups, sharing economy platforms, and multi-stakeholder partnerships. He is a core member of the Organisational Discourse, Strategy and Change research group and sits on editorial boards for European Management Journal and m@n@gement. With over 18 peer-reviewed articles and 12 research grants, his work addresses identity practices in emergent firms, stakeholder engagement ethics, and agile strategizing. He teaches courses on strategic management, entrepreneurship, and organizational dynamics. Recent grants include studies on entrepreneurial identity development and innovation network dynamics.
His research interests span organizational identity construction, strategy-as-practice frameworks, and the role of identity in innovation processes. Notable contributions include frameworks for understanding identity work in skunkworks teams and the ethical dimensions of sharing economy platforms. He actively participates in global academic networks such as the Academy of Management's Strategizing Activities and Practices Interest Group.
Teaching focuses on graduate programs like the EMBA and executive education, emphasizing strategic decision-making and connected enterprise management. Professional contributions include advisory roles on stakeholder partnerships and innovation governance.
