David Oliver is an Associate Professor of Management at HEC Montréal’s Department of Management. He holds a Doctorate in Economics (Management) from the University of Lausanne (2002), an MBA from York University (1992), and a BA in Economics from the University of Waterloo (1988). His research focuses on organizational identity, strategy-as-practice, and stakeholder engagement, with notable contributions to understanding decision-making in complex environments and team dynamics.
Oliver has authored over 20 peer-reviewed articles and book chapters, including seminal works on organizational identity construction and strategic decision-making frameworks. He has received prestigious awards such as the oikos Foundation Global Case Writing Competition (2009) and multiple Academy of Management recognitions. His teaching spans Strategic Management, Management Skills, and contemporary strategy tools in French and English.
He has supervised 12 consulting projects for MBA/MSc programs and advised doctoral students across multiple universities. Notable consulting clients include Credit Suisse, Microsoft, and CERN. Oliver’s research grants include funding from the Quebec Fund for Research and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada.
He has presented at leading conferences worldwide, including the Academy of Management Annual Meeting and European Group for Organization Studies. Oliver is a member of the Academy of Management, European Group for Organization Studies, and serves on HEC Montreal’s Strategy-as-Practice Study Group.
